The story of people should be nice.

People should be nice was born from a wish to see people love and lift one another up. The name was simultaneously created by Samantha and Kelby Dover, frontman of pop/rock band Kid Politics, while naming the band itself. Scrolling through social media, Kelby saw a photo of a young girl holding a hand-written sign stating, “Just be nice.” The simplicity of this statement by a kid started a discussion:

“What if adults treated one another the same as kids treat one another on a playground? Kids don’t care who you are, your skin color, where you’re from, who you love or how much money is in your bank. They just want to play together on the swings. How much different would our world be if adults viewed and treated one another the same?”

This vision of ordinary people practicing small acts of kindness led to the creation of people should be nice.

In 2016, Samantha started dropping off small gifts for teachers and staff at a local Nashville, TN school to encourage their efforts. After a school counselor took notice, Samantha was requested to be involved on a deeper support level. Under the banner people should be nice, Samantha started hosting teacher breakfast carts before school hours, attending partner meetings and joining career days alongside Kelby. During Christmas holiday break in 2019, people should be nice hosted a classroom makeover giveaway after raising hundreds of dollars to help promote school attendance and moral. To much success, perfect attendance at this local school was raised from 4% the prior year to 20%, exceeding all expectations.

In 2020, tornadoes shut down schools for weeks and the rising pandemic halted all plans.

Now in 2022, opportunities are now ready for people should be nice to once again open it’s arms. With anticipation and alongside the growing community of Kid Politics, people should be nice is elated to return to their community, both local and worldwide. The mission remains the same - love and lift one another up.
